The Boy, The Drip, and the Universe of Phin
Long before the world tasted his coffee,
Vũ Đình Tú was just a little boy in Hanoi, mesmerized by the slow, deliberate rhythm of his grandfather making Phin coffee every morning. In the quiet dawn, watching the dark drops fall one by one, he unknowingly absorbed a ritual of stillness.
As Tú grew up, his path seemed to veer far away from those slow mornings.
He became a young man defined by extreme discipline and intellect: a math prodigy at the prestigious Hanoi-Amsterdam high school, a gold-medal-winning professional basketball player, and a high-flying investment banker who scored at the absolute top of global accounting exams. He was a man of numbers, strategy, and corporate success. Yet, in 2017, at the peak of his corporate career, he walked away from it all to find his true self. He embraced Vipassana meditation, seeking inner peace, and by 2020, his heart led him back to the world of coffee.
The turning point came on a restless night in March 2024. Tú found himself haunted by a core question: "How will Vietnamese people drink coffee in 50 years, and where will the Phin be in that picture?".
He looked around and saw that while everyone knew the Phin, the youth had abandoned it, viewing it as an outdated relic meant only for "the old folks". The Hanoian boy who once watched his grandfather with wide-eyed wonder realized the beloved Phin was dying in practical, modern life. He turned into an absolute fool for the Phin, driven by a cultural mission to "continue" this beautiful heritage and ensure it actively lives on.
But Tú wasn't just a romantic; he was an auditor and an athlete who demanded perfection. To save the Phin, he had to engineer a better one. He discarded the traditional flat bottom and calculated a precise 164.8-degree angle to drastically improve water flow and extraction. He then replaced the classic round base with a signature 5-petal flower, adding a playful, modern, and soft touch to the brewer.
From this relentless pursuit, a grander vision was born. Tú realized that to truly revive the Phin, one design wasn't enough. He needed to build a "Universe of Phin, where everyone finds their own Phin". He expanded his creations, crafting a diverse ecosystem of brewers:
The Modern Plastic Phin: The world's first plastic Phin, made from heat-stable PP5 material, designed with ultimate flexibility to brew both thick traditional coffee and clean, modern pour-overs.
The Artisan Ceramic Phin: Crafted in the 700-year-old Bát Tràng pottery village, this edition honors traditional craftsmen while featuring a larger chamber so you can brew two portions at once—perfect for sharing a moment with a loved one.
The Traditional Aluminum Phin: A heartfelt homage to the "father" of Vietnamese coffee culture. Designed for those who want to disconnect from a fast-moving world, this Phin turns brewing into a "ritual for inner peace," delivering the bold, classic taste of home.
The Titanium Edition (Ngựa Chín Hồng Mao): The ultimate masterpiece. Made from aerospace-grade Titanium Grade 23—the exact material used to build spaceships—this limited-edition Phin hides a mythical nine-maned horse from Vietnamese folklore inside. It is a testament to Tú's belief that Vietnamese culture is resilient enough to reach the stars.
